Summary
Set in 1830s Spain, this is the film adaptation of Prosper Mérimée's 1847 heady tale of dark sexual obsession. Bandit José used to be a sergeant in the army until he was seduced by the bewitching gypsy prostitute, Carmen, who confesses to having made a pact with the Devil. In a fit of jealousy, José kills his lieutenant and superior and takes to the hills, becoming a smuggler. That is, until One-Eye, who bought Carmen when she was 12, gets out of prison. A knife fight with One-Eye ensues. Nevertheless, now facing death by garrotting, José says that even if he could, he would not wipe the memory of Carmen from his life
